Unit Theme/Topic: Abstracting movement from words
Lesson Title/Topic:
Introduction to Poetry Unit: Day 1
Expected Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will be able to work independently and follow the directions on my wikipage.
Class progression is as follows:
-Warm up -Isolations -Strength training -Flexibility training -Ballet Technique: Plie, tendu, degage, rond de jambe -Across the floor: jazz walks, runs, prances, set movement patterns -Hand out the poetry handout. The requirements for the project will be posted on my wiki page. **http://helmersdancepage.wikispaces.com/**
Closure: Students will sit in a circle as I pass out the Dance Poem Handout. Student volunteers will read the instructions out loud and time will be given for questions.
CA Academic Standards Addressed:
High School Course 3D.
1.1 Demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills in two or more dance activities, selecting one or more from each of the following categories. Category 2: Modern, Ballet, and Jazz
1.3 Apply previously learned movement concepts to the learning and developing of the motor skills required for successful participation in dance activities.
Materials Used:
Music (my ipod) and dance studio with mirrors are required.

Students will quickly line up into 4 rows on the right side of the dance studio.
Students will return to the center floor for a directed cool down and closure. Homework will be assigned.
Returnto the locker room to dress.
Monitoring & Assessment:
Students will be monitored through direct verbal feedback. Assessment for this lesson will be informal. They will be assessed through observation and checks for understanding.
Modifications to Address Individual Student Learning Needs
Movements will be given modifications for students with special needs. I will constantly assess the students through observation to determine whether or not modifications are needed.
Various methods of instruction are used; modeling, verbal direction, peer feedback, peer modeling.
Follow-up Activities/ Homework
Students will be given a brief handout on the unit. Dance Poetry. All reguired assignments are to be brought the following day to class.

Unit: Conflict Research Project Unit Goals:
1. In groups students will research a human conflict (past or present) that interests them. They will research the conflict following the guidelines provided. The students will produce a brief power point project that outlines the conflict, the power point also needs to include a list of resources.
2. Students will create a 2 minute dance that represents the conflict and the emotions that the dancer interprets.
3. Students will choose music, without lyrics, that enhances, but does not dictate the movements of the dance.
CA Standards: 1.2 Identify the characteristics and critical elements of a highly skilled performance in dance activities and demonstrate them. 1.6 Demonstrate independant learning of movement skills in dance activities. 3.7 Accept and perform planned and spontaneous leadership assignments and roles in dance activities.
